Dick Cheney's hopes of having a political legacy family like the Bush family have been dashed: his eldest daughter, Elizabeth, has abandoned her bid for a seat on the Wyoming senate.

According to CNN, Cheney confirmed her withdrawal in a written statement. "Serious health issues have recently arisen in our family, and under the circumstances, I have decided to discontinue my campaign," the eldest daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney said in a written statement. "Though this campaign stops today, my commitment to keep fighting with you and your families for the fundamental values that have made this nation and Wyoming great will never stop," she added.

Although she didn't specify what health issues her family faced, her decision to unseat the sitting Senator, Mike Enzi, caused a rift in both her family and the Republican party, according to NBC News.

"A bitter spat over same-sex marriage between the Cheney sisters spilled over into the public arena when Mary Cheney and her wife, Heather Poe, took to social media to blast the elder sister for her continued opposition to gay marriage.

"The Wyoming GOP reacted in a statement: 'The Wyoming Republican Party wishes the best to Liz Cheney and her family as they deal with difficult family health issues. Liz has been a stalwart supporter of our party raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for our candidates and county parties. Liz is a rising star in Wyoming and national politics and we look forward to her return when the time is right for her and her family,'" writes NBC News.

Furthermore, according to the same outlet, the health issues that Cheney is referring to are about her children, not her father -- even though it's the latter who has a long and well-documented history of health problems.
