'FIFA 16' Release Date & Gameplay Rumors: EA to Inclue Women in Next Soccer Simulator [Watch]
Women are finally getting their chance to appear in a sports game.
"FIFA 16" will feature women in its upcoming soccer simulator, Polygon reports.
A recent press event previewed the upcoming game, allowing reporters the chance to play the game's demo as either Germany or the United States. The character models in "FIFA 16" are different from the men's version, but the game will play the same way.
There are just 12 women's teams in "FIFA 16," and they are all international teams. No club teams or college leagues will be available. Available women's international teams will be United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, England, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Sweden, China and Australia.
It's a start for women being added to the game, but it is nowhere near the number of men's teams and players included in "FIFA 15," which featured more than 30 men's leagues, each with at least 12 teams and about 50 international teams.
"For us, it was more about getting the most of the best players," Nick Channon, producer for "FIFA 16," said. "The international women's game is big. Obviously that's where the best players are. We wanted to start there."
Some of women's soccer's top stars have been scanned into the game to get an accurate model, but many other models are based on photographs. With the use of motion captures, EA Canada was able to get accurate models for USA players Sydney Leroux, Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe.
"I honestly can't believe all of the science and technology behind the game itself, let alone getting us into the motion capture suits and eventually into the game," Wambach said, according to a press release. "We're all excited to see ourselves in the game, but even more excited to see the reaction from all of the fans, including the fans of our team that maybe wouldn't be expecting something like this from EA Sports."
In "FIFA 16," the women's teams will not be able to compete against the men's teams. Channon said that this choice was made because they wanted to keep the game "authentic" and in real soccer the men do not play against the women.
Women's teams will be available in several different game modes including Kick Off, Match Day, Offline Tournaments, Skill Games and Online Friendly Matches, according to an EA spokesperson.
Channon said that he is waiting on feedback regarding the women being in the game. Game developers will then see if they want to expand women in the game.
The announcement of the addition of women in the game comes just days before the Women's World Cup begins next week in Canada.
