More than 3 million Xbox One consoles have been sold, Microsoft reported this week. Sony's PlayStation 4 sales numbers, which were expected to be similar or perhaps even better, could be announced tonight, the USA Today reported.

Yusuf Mehdi, who serves as the Corporate Vice President of Marketing, Strategy, and Business for Xbox, released a statement following the sales announcement.

"It's been incredible to see Xbox One selling at a record-setting pace for Xbox, and we were honored to see Xbox One become the fastest-selling console in the U.S. during our launch month in November. Since our launch, demand for Xbox One has been strong, selling out throughout the holidays at most retailers worldwide. We are continuing to work hard to deliver additional consoles to retailers as fast as possible."

Microsoft attributes some of its success to the extra features that extend beyond just regular gaming. The company signed partnership deals with the NFL and other companies to help make the game console as interactive as possible. Some people have even called it a PC.

"We also love that you are seeing the promise of an all-in-one entertainment system," Mehdi said. "Millions of hours of live TV have been watched and millions of hours of app entertainment have been enjoyed. We are proud to have the most passionate, engaged, and simply the best fans in the world. It was fun to share the holidays with so many of you."

The sales numbers for the Xbox One in the United States seem to paint a different picture of the console war than in Europe, where the PlayStation 4 is selling better -- at least in the U.K. We should expect the two sides to spend the next several months trying to solidify their respective spots as the top game console in the world.
