There is a long history of genius-types having some issues with their fathers.

In pulse-pounding popular entertainment, it's happened to "Indiana Jones" and "Iron Man."

And in Season 4 of CBS’s take on the Sherlock Holmes mythos “Elementary,” the father-son dynamic involving two dynamos will be introduced.

As Season 3 concluded, the struggling private investigator (Jonny Lee Miller) relapsed while trying to rescue his AA sponsor. After all this went down Watson (Lucy Liu) said that the senior Mr. Holmes was coming to New York.

Rob Doherty spoke to TVLine about daddy Holmes dropping by and all the opportunity this opens up.

“I would very much like to meet Dad and explore this very complicated dynamic that we’ve been alluding to over the last two seasons," he said. "There’s a lot to get out of a longer-term story about Sherlock and his father and everything between them.”

A relapse is exactly what fans of the series had been dreading, but, as Doherty says, it is a reality.

“It’s a sad truth about addiction — relapses are far from extraordinary," he added.

Doherty added that this one could feel "bigger" because it's Holmes, and he's not someone people can easily compare themselves to. But his addiction and struggles show that he can be just like any other person.

When asked about Holmes’ father by Natalie Abrams for Entertainment Weekly, the executive producer described the character as a complicated man, like his son.

“When Sherlock has described him, he hasn’t painted a picture of a very loving father… and yet it’s worth noting this will be the second time he’s taken steps to help his son during a difficult time," Doherty added.

"Elementary" will return to CBS in the fall.
