Los Angeles Lakers News & Rumors: Should Jeremy Lin Be Re-Signed?
After setting a franchise record for most losses (61) in a single season, the Los Angeles Lakers are ready to reload.
The Lakers have the No. 2 overall selection in the upcoming draft, they are clearing tons of salary cap space, and their roster is getting younger. Future Hall of Fame shooting guard Kobe Bryant will most likely only play one more year before retiring, but the Lakers still have to focus on their up and coming free agents to be.
One of the most notable Lakers free agents is Jeremy Lin.
Last season was Lin's first year with the Lakers, and it was full of ups and downs. Lin led the Lakers in total assists with 339, 133 more than the next player, Jordan Clarkson. As a point guard, Lin did his job distributing the ball and leading the team in assists; however he also led the team in turnovers as well. Bryant only played in 35 games because of a knee injury, and Lin's most reliable scorers were Jordan Hill and Nick Young.
The Lakers didn't originally sign Lin. They traded for him and his contract last offseason and had to take an $8.3 million cap hit. If the Lakers do re-sign Lin, it would be for significantly less than that amount.
If the Lakers and Lin are unable to reach an agreement, general manager Mitch Kupchak dos have options elsewhere in free agency beginning this summer. Some notable point guards set to become free agents include Rajon Rondo, Reggie Jackson, Mo Williams, Patrick Beverley, Cory Joseph and Norris Cole. Cole, Beverly and Jackson are restricted free agents, so the Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons and New Orleans Pelicans will have first dibs.
As for Rondo, he has been involved in Lakers trade rumors for quite some time. Rondo spent the last portion of this season with the Dallas Mavericks, and it is extremely unlikely he will return with the team. Rondo is a better passer than Lin, but he isn't without his flaws. Rondo is a below average jump shooter and a terrible free throw shooter. Rondo made just 39.7 percent of his free throws this season while Lin made 79.5 percent of his.
Choosing Rondo over Lin would also be very costly. Rondo won't come cheap as many teams will be bidding high for him. Odds are Rondo will demand at least $8 million at minimum per year, a lot more than Lin will.
There's no doubt Lin has some work to do with Byron Scott's new system. With so many players set to leave, and so many young players coming in, this rebuilding process will take some time. Choosing a different point guard would result in said player having to learn Scott's system. Heading into next year, Lin is familiar with this squad and he knows the coaching staff. Having Lin provide bench minutes next season could also be valuable.
There's no doubt the Lakers will have to pay big money for Rondo, if that's who they really want. Lin won't demand as high of a price on the market, but the Dallas Mavericks have shown interest in the 26-year-old point guard. Reports have circulated that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is a fan of Lin, and could sign him this offseason.
The Lakers should be much improved from last season as they will be younger and have a lot more cap space available. Re-signing Lin wouldn't do any harm because he wouldn't get paid elite money, can help off the bench, and he is familiar with the system. However, the Lakers have to consider all options.
Other Lakers free agents this offseason include Carlos Boozer, Wayne Ellington, Wesley Johnson, Ronnie Price and Vander Blue.
