Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens Plot Spoilers: What Role Will Andy Serkis' Snoke Have in New Film?
Andy Serkis' character in "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" has finally been revealed.
A previously unpublished image from Vanity has been revealed online showing the actor in full motion-capture equipment as the Supreme Leader Snoke. While the image does not actually show what this character will look like, the name has been confirmed.
This is the second confirmed motion capture character in the movie; Lupita Nyongo' will also play a character created via the technology.
This is not surprising for Serkis considering that he has played mo-cap characters his entire career. Among his credits are Gollum from "The Lord of the Rings" franchise and even Caesar in the "Planet of the Apes" reboot films. He also played the eponymous character in Peter Jackson's "King Kong."
Of course, what is most intriguing about his Snoke is that the character is called the Supreme Leader. Supreme Leader of what exactly? Some believe that he might be the man leading The First Order, which is the reborn empire that has been hinted out through the two trailers. The other bit of speculation is that he might be the new Sith Lord that has trained Adam Driver's Kylo Ren.
It will undoubtedly be interesting to see what exactly Snoke's role in the new film is, but that will have to wait until the film is released. It is possible that even that will not showcase his true nature. Emperor Palpatine did not even show up until "Empire Strikes Back" in the original trilogy and even then he was seen through a hologram. He revealed his true self in "Return of the Jedi."
In the Marvel Universe, the company has kept Thanos on the margins in many of its films, seemingly saving him for a big encounter in a later film. This could happen with Snoke as well.
"Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" is slated for release on Dec. 18, 2015
