‘Empire’ Season 2 Premiere Date and Spoilers: Taraji P. Henson Spills Premiere Date on Social Media; Oprah Winfrey and Common to Guest Star
Fox Network had not announced the fall premiere date for Season 2 of its mega-hit TV series "Empire," but the show's superstar Taraji P. Henson, who plays Cookie Lyon, revealed the date while using Twitter on May 29.
The star gave fans a big reveal about when their favorite TV obsession returns to prime time this fall, and it all came after one user asked Henson a simple question.
"@TherealTaraji hello just wondering when Empire season 2 will begin?" Twitter user @Ay2dakay2020 wrote on Friday.
"Hello! September 23 #Empire season," Henson tweeted.
A couple hours later, the official Empire writers Twitter handle confirmed the date with this tweet: "#Empire fans! @EmpireFOX Season 2 returns Wednesday, September 23, 2015! #MarkYourCalendars #GameTimeB****es."
The Season 1 finale ended with Vernon killed by Andre's pregnant wife, Rhonda. Lucious gave his son, Jamal, power over the record company, but Anika plotted a hostile takeover. Lucious was arrested for murder, believing that his family set him up. The final scene showed the record mogul behind bars in prison.
What can fans expect in Season 2?
In early April, TV producer Brian Grazer -- whose Imagine TV produces "Empire" -- visited "Good Morning America" to promote his book, "A Curious Mind: The Secret to a Bigger Life." Before he left, he gave "Empire" fans a little inside information about Season 2.
"Eminem, I know, loves our show. And I produced '8 Mile.' I'm going to beg him to get on our show. He and Oprah Winfrey. Somehow I'm going to get one or both of them on our show," Grazer told George Stephanopoulos.
The "Empire" creator Lee Daniels recently confirmed that Winfrey will guest star during an interview with "Access Hollywood," in which he also said that Golden Globe, Grammy and Oscar-winning singer Common would also be making a guest appearance.
Deadline reports that singer and songwriter Ne-Yo will write songs as part of the cast alongside Timbaland.
Jussie Smollett, who plays Jamal, revealed to Essence magazine that "Empire's" second season will be more dramatic and heated than its predecessor. He said Season 2 will make Season 1 look like "The Brady Bunch."
Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz and Chris Rock will appear as guest stars in the new season, reports Hollywood Reporter.
Cookie's blunt personal assistant will be back for Season 2, executive producer Ilene Chaiken told E! News.
"Patti LaBelle will return," the singing legend told "Entertanment Tonight" when asked about her role on "Empire."
"At first Lee [Daniels] had me playing an angel. I said, 'An angel? That means I'm over!' You know?"
In Season 2, "Empire" will increase from 12 to 18 episodes that will be split between fall and winter. The first season premiered in the winter.
Watch "Empire" when it airs on Wednesdays starting Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
