Roger Federer and Kei Nishikori advanced to the quarterfinals after beating their respective opponents to continue their quest for the French Open 2015 title.

Swiss fans are already assured of a compatriot playing in the semifinals of the tournament as No. 2 seed Federer goes up against No. 8 seed Stan Wawrinka.

The 17-time Grand Slam titlist is excited to face the 30-year old as he noted it's not always the case that Swiss players are included in the tourney.

"It is not a traditional match," said Federer to Steve G Tennis. "There aren't too many Swiss players in the draw. It's always special to play each other."

"There will be a Swiss guy in the semi-final. That's positive. I hope I will reach the semifinal of a tournament. I will pull out all the stops to advance to the next round. If I will not make it, I will be very happy for Stan," he added.

The match would mark the 19th time the two compatriots would face each other. Federer won in 16 of their matches, with four of that in grand slam competitions.

The 33-year old won against Wawrinka on clay this year at Rome, though he lost to the 29-year old in last year's match in Monte Carlo.

Meanwhile, Kei Nishikori is looking to make another milestone for the history books as one of the few Japanese players to reach the last two rounds. Jiro Satoh was the only other Japanese tennis player to make it to the quarterfinals in 1931 and 1933.

But Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is bent on making history as well. It was 32 years ago when a Frenchman took home the Roland Garros trophy and the 30-year old is hoping to end that drought this year.

Their match up would be the sixth time the two opponents would face each other. Nishikori came out the best in four out of their previous five games.

"He had very good results on clay," said Tsonga to The National. "He won tournaments, which I didn't. Not even one time."

The Frenchman acknowledged Nishikori's advantage on the clay court.

"He is a good player on clay. He is able to play on every surface," he added.

But the Japanese is looking forward to an exciting match with Tsonga.

"We haven't played a long time," said the 25-year old to Steve G Tennis. "He's coming back very strong. He has a big serve and big forehand. He's always a dangerous player. So it's going to be a fun match."
