Online Leak Reveals Microsoft Working On 'Hassle-Free' Wi-Fi Service For Windows, Android & iOS Devices
Microsoft continues its quest to provide a cross-platform service that utilizes the Wi-Fi network. Details of the new Wi-Fi feature have leaked online, showing a service that aims to cater to the most popular mobile operating systems.
Information about the upcoming Microsoft Wi-Fi was discovered on microsoftwifi.com by Twitter user h0x0d. The description written on the site explained that the service aims to give "hassle-free Internet access around the world" to enable users to be "productive on the go."
The post has since been pulled from the Internet with the website now only showing a "Coming Soon" post when accessed.
Venture Beat spoke to a representative from Microsoft to clarify if there will be an upcoming offering from the company.
"We can confirm that we are working on a new service, called Microsoft WiFi, that will bring hassle-free Wi-Fi to millions," revealed the representative from the Redmond-based firm. "We look forward to sharing additional detail when available."
Based on the blurb posted on the site when it was still active, the Wi-Fi service will enable users to connect with a service provider regardless of where he is located in the world.
"Don't waste time filling forms with personal information or managing different carriers to get connected. Sign in once and you are done: you will automatically be connected to a vast range of WiFi providers around the world," the advertisement of the service read.
While not too many details were seen on the website, the service will be available to Android and iOS users as well. Downloadable app links for Windows, Android, iOS, Mac and Windows Phone were available on the site before it was taken down.
This coincides with the company's initiative to be available in multiple operating systems to capture a bigger market. The first service to offer a cross-platform accessibility is the voice digital assistant, Cortana.
Though Microsoft Wi-Fi seems to target everyone to use its service, it won't be available to all, initially. A user has to be "eligible" to use the app, added the site. No information on the qualifications and requirements was mentioned.
The service will be accessible to "customers who received a special WiFi offer from Microsoft," employees of companies that utilize Microsoft Office 365 for Enterprise and Skype WiFi users who access the service via Microsoft Work & Play Bundle, Venture Beat listed.
More information are expected to arrive soon for the WiFi service once Microsoft officially announces it.
