Bill Cosby Reportedly Seeks to Have Settlement Terms From 2006 Sex Assault Case Blocked From Release
Bill Cosby has filed legal documents seeking to have the settlement terms of a 2006 sex assault lawsuit blocked from public release.
The Daily Mail reports attorneys for Cosby are attempting to block a subpoena sent to a lawyer by three women who are suing the famed comedian for defamation in Massachusetts.
In all, 77-year-old Cosby has been accused by more than 30 women of sexual misconduct that allegedly includes drugging and raping them in incidents that span as far back as 40 years.
Cosby has never been criminally charged in any of the incidents, and the statutes of limitations has expired on many of them.
In the case in question, Tamara Green, Therese Serignese and Linda Traitz all charge Cosby with defaming them by having his representatives incessantly deny their claims that the actor molested them in the 1970s.
Much of the suit hinges on recent denials of sex abuse made by members of Cosby's defense team.
In January 2004, Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee, accused "The Cosby Show" legend of drugging and fondling her, but in February 2005, Montgomery County's District Attorney said there would be no charges due to lack of evidence.
In March 2005, Constand filed a civil claim along with 133 other women as potential witnesses if the case went to court and Cosby settled out of court for an undisclosed amount in November 2006.
Cosby's lawyer argued in court on Tuesday that court confidentiality agreements "should not be set aside lightly." He also asked for the right to review and challenge any material set to be unsealed.
Cosby also faces a similar defamation suit brought against him by model Janice Dickinson, who claims her reputation was tarnished after her claims that he drugged and raped her in 1982 were dismissed by Cosby as "fabricated lies."
"I was drugged and raped by Bill Cosby," she told Entertainment Tonight last month. "And the fact that he and his spokespeople have called me a liar -- referring to remarks that I've made -- it's just not correct."
