On the progressive and much praised ABC Family show “The Fosters,” Jude (Hayden Byerly) -- who has the distinction of being the youngest character to ever receive a same-sex kiss on a prime time show -- will now be dealing with the ramifications of his new relationship and struggling with whether or not he should even let people know about his love life.

In a Season 3 sneak peek for Episode 1, “Wreckage,” we see Jude and his boyfriend Connor (Gavin MacIntosh) sitting on a tree.

Connor tells Jude that he has already done the hard part and told his father about his feelings, then Jude says he does not think they should tell anyone because it is nobody's business. Then the school bell rings.

The boy's budding romance has been a long time in coming, and now that it is here perhaps it all just makes story sense that deciding whether or not to tell people would become an issue of drama on the series known for its LGBT themes.

In an interview with Gawker, 14-year-old Byerly talks about the difficulty in building up the romantic aspects of the characters.

“It took a while to get to the point where the writers were able to write it into the story just because Gavin and I weren’t really comfortable early on playing this role and doing such a serious thing with one another," he said. “It’s kind of interesting to kiss someone who you’re friends with who’s also the same sex when you’re interested in the opposite sex."

That first kiss was pretty groundbreaking. And though there were positive responses, there were also people who were offended.

Byerly's strategy when it came to dealing with any criticism is to “kind of just ignore it.”

Episode 1 of Season 3 of “The Fosters” airs on June 8 on ABC Family.
