Justin Bieber Pleads Guilty to Assault, Careless Driving in Ontario Crash
Justin Bieber pleaded guilty Thursday to assault and careless driving regarding an accident that happened in Canada last August, People Magazine reports.
An additional charge of dangerous driving was dropped, his lawyer told CBCNews.
The "Love Me Again" singer was fined $750 in Canadian dollars (about $600 in U.S. dollars) for the careless driving charge and received an absolute discharge on the assault charge.
The Toronto Star reports that the pop star was not in court for the hearing, but appeared by a video link to admit to the attack on photographers. He was dressed in a white-collared shirt and did not speak before being sentenced.
Addressing the "Energy" singer on Thursday, Stratford Justice Kathryn McKerlie told him that "the lesson in all of this is to think before you act. Everybody in life, no matter who they are, encounters difficult and disappointing and surprising situations."
The charges stemmed from an August 2014 incident in which Bieber was arrested after his ATV collided with a minivan near Stratford. A lawyer for the singer said Bieber was on a "peaceful retreat" at the time with Selena Gomez when their time together was interrupted by paparazzi.
It's not the first time the Calvin Klein model has had a run-in with the law.
He pleaded guilty to careless driving and resisting arrest, without violence, regarding an August 2014 DUI case in Miami. His plea agreement included taking anger management classes and making a charitable donation.
In July 2014, the Biebs accepted a plea bargain to settle a misdemeanor vandalism charge for egging his neighbor's house. He received two years' probation, a court order to stay at least 100 yards away from the victim's family and pay $80,900 restitution for damages.
In June 2013, he was reportedly involved in a Los Angeles accident involving a pedestrian.
At the end of his Comedy Central roast of March 30, the pop singer vowed to turn over a new leaf.
"There was really no preparing me for this life," he said onstage. "I was thrown into this at 12 years old, and I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. There's been moments I'm really proud of and a lot of moments I look back and I'm pretty disappointed with myself for."
He added, "But the things that I've done really don't define who I am. I'm a kind-hearted person who loves people and, through it all, lost some of my best qualities. For that, I'm sorry. But what I can say is that I'm looking forward to being someone you can look at and be proud of."
