Dr. Oz Hires Top Ranking Medical Expert to Add Expertise and Verify Scripts
Representatives for the "Dr. Oz Show" announced this week that the program has hired a medical expert to assume charge of "researching and verifying scripts, evaluating expert guest and editing medical animations."
The New York Daily News reports the show has tabbed Dr. Michael Crupain, who formerly worked as director of Consumer Reports' Food Safety and Sustainability Center, for the newly created post of chief of staff of the medical unit.
The move appears to be in direct response to a deluge of criticism Dr. Oz recently came under when a team of highly regarded physicians blasted him as a "quack, a fake and a charlatan" based on some of the medical advice he has delivered on his show over the years.
CNN previously reported the team of 10 doctors also began a movement aimed at having him removed from his prestigious post as vice chairman of the Columbia medical school's department of surgery.
Dr. Oz countered much of the attack was spurred by his support for labeling genetically modified foods. Later, he vowed that neither he nor his show would be "silenced" by all the mounting criticism.
"This month, we celebrate my 1000th show," he said in a recently taped special episode of "The Dr. Oz Show."
Later, he added, "I know I've irritated some potential allies in our quest to make America healthy. No matter our disagreements, freedom of speech is the most fundamental right we have as Americans. And these 10 doctors are trying to silence that right."
In time, the doctors also wrote to top faculty members at Columbia, not only challenging his high-ranking position at the university but also accusing him of "promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal financial gain."
