Hollywood’s Highest Paid Actors: Who's on Elite Salary List
When it comes to box-office returns, veteran Hollywood stars in demand typically get the highest salaries. But according to Movie Pilot, there is a list of actors who demand high front-end salaries before they take on a project.
Sometimes, young actors with small resumes but good numbers won't get the high front-end salaries that veterans make. But all that really means is that they get paid more if their movies do well at the box-office, with a bulk of their earnings coming off the backend of the release.
Studios do this as a way to curb costs if a movie fails to perform at the box-office. This consideration is given to those movies that equally weigh the production costs with actor's salaries. A formula gives studios what they need to know in order to pay an actor.
But when it comes to Hollywood veterans with a backlog of commercial box-office success, the upfront salaries are much higher. Here are a few actors from the article that make a good example of that elite list.
Leonardo DiCaprio has been acting now for nearly three decades, coming up as a child star on shows like "Growing Pains" and "The Basketball Diaries." But it was his role in "Titanic" that led him to commercially high salaries.
His recent hit movie "Wolf of Wall Street" was a commercial success, but the studios knew that going into the project, considering they paid him $25 million to play the role.
Robert Downey Jr. has an extensive backlog of success, but most of it is derived from his portrayal of Tony Stark in the "Iron Man" and "Avengers" franchise, coupled with the success of the "Sherlock Holmes" franchise.
His highest paid salary so far was for playing Tony Stark, which gave him a $20 million payday.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been with the industry for over a decade now, but his previous role in the wrestling organization WWE had already catapulted him to fame.
His current movie "San Andreas" gave the action star a $15 million payday, and his legacy on the "Fast and Furious" franchise is sure to give him much more.
Bradley Cooper has become quite a "sought after" actor for the Hollywood scene, playing action, comedy and dramatic roles to perfection. His highest paid role to date was on "The Hangover III" with a $15 million upfront.
Matt Damon has turned Jason Bourne into the American version of James Bond. His legacy on the film franchise and other notable works in action, drama and comedy have earned the Oscar winning actor a top spot on the salary list. His current highest upfront salary comes from "Jason Bourne" with $20 million.
