Academy Award nominated director Ridley Scott has teamed up with Oscar winner Matt Damon in a new sci-fi thriller, "The Martian."

The film is based on a book of the same name by Andy Weir, according to Entertainment Weekly.

This big-budget release will feature Damon playing the role of Mark Watney, who is left for dead on Mars when his crew encounters a sudden storm on the red planet and has to evacuate.

The film is mostly based on Watney's ordeal, having been left stranded with about 30 days of food and livable quarters on the planet. He attempts to reach NASA and, with harrowing odds, his journey takes a new toll.

He must confront his unique scientific abilities by repurposing the makeshift quarters left behind to form a sustainable living arrangement for himself. He clearly states in the S.O.S. video message to home that he has little hope of them receiving the message. But even if they do get the message, it will take four years for a rescue squad to arrive.

The biggest plot of the film is not only his unique ability to use science to achieve the necessary elements for survival, but also whether or not his message has been received.

In the trailer, it is clear his message does get received and that politics comes into play when his crew, Ares 3, disregards an order not to proceed with the rescue and attempts to save him.

Joining Damon on the all-star cast of this exciting new sci-fi survival thriller is Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald Glover, Kate Mara, Michael Peña and Kristen Wiig.

The recently released trailer teases the film for a Nov. 25 release date and is looking to cash in on the big holiday weekend. Other films that have done well in that same time period are the "Hunger Games" franchise and Disney's "Frozen."
