Season 3 of critically praised ABC Family series “The Fosters” will focus much of its dramatic tension around the hardships that come along with kids coming out at school.

Last season, Jude (Hayden Byerly) and Connor (Gavin MacIntosh) shared their love as well as a groundbreaking TV kiss, and now the middle schoolers will learn the consequences of going public with their relationship.

Zap2it reports 14-year-old Byerly talked about the upcoming season, explaining what is to come.

"It's going to be a lot about them moving forward with their relationship," he said. "They have a lot of decisions to make about what they want to do about it. We're going to see a lot of that as it's developing."

The same-sex kiss that both shocked and heartened their audience was the youngest ever same-sex kiss to be shown on television.

Show creator Peter Paige spoke to TV Guide about the kiss and its aftermath.

“When we did the kiss, I was so invested in the character journey that I was not prepared for the backlash," Paige said.

“When we went onto air for 'The Fosters,' they prepared us for negativity and there was almost none. Suddenly, [after the kiss] there was, and I was really taken aback by it," said Paige, who pointed out that even some gay people were upset by how young the actors were.

Paige added that the kiss was not "salacious." The two young boys did not kiss for two seasons, which he said meant that it was "earned."

“As gay adults we start out as gay kids, and we have to stop apologizing for that and pretending it's not true,” said Paige, who is perhaps best known for his role on the Showtime series “Queer as Folk.”

Season 3’s Episode 1, “Wreckage,” airs on Monday at 8/7c on ABC Family.
