Sixty-one people were arrested outside of the MetLife stadium in New Jersey during the Hot 97 Summer Jam concert Sunday night.

New Jersey State Police say that unruly concert goers climbed fences and tried to push past the security entrance gate to get inside of Summer Jam, an all-star hip-hop concert, which included performances from 50 Cent, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill and Chris Brown.

The commotion started when officials shut the entrance down, blocking both ticket holders and non-ticket holders from entering. People became angry and some threw bottles and trash at the police and security personnel blocking the gates. Additional troopers were called in from nearby stations to assist. Police also used noise generators, pepper spray and tear gas to disperse people who refused to clear the area outside of the main gate.

"A small group of highly disruptive people ruined this concert for many others. They created a danger to ticket-holders, stadium employees, and troopers on the scene. Our troopers took the appropriate steps to restore order to what was a brief and volatile situation," said Colonel Rick Fuentes, superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, according to The Associated Press.

When the gates were briefly re-opened for ticket holders, people without tickets attempted to push their way in. As a result, officials closed the entrance and some legitimate ticket holders were not able to get into the concert, officials said.

"They shut it down because people was getting violent, they was afraid that the people acting stupid would spill inside and everything was good inside," Hot 97 radio personality Ebro explained.

Nimi Hendrix said he spent more than $1,000 to be a part of the concert only to wait outside the gate.

"It was like a disaster, only because people had their tickets and it was like they couldn't get in, they kept closing the gates on you," concert-goer Mimi Jones told ABC 7's Eyewitness News.

Likewise, Janae Griffin, who drove from Baltimore for the concert but did not get in, said he witnessed the chaos in the parking lot.

"People were throwing bottles across the crowd," she said. "We got into a confrontation with a guy who was deliberately trying to vandalize a police car and was just making it worse of a situation than it needed to be."

Hot 97 announced on Twitter that ticket holders will be granted a full refund if their ticket was not scanned.

The majority of those arrested were charged with disorderly conduct.
