Season 3 of "Masters of Sex" is shaping up to take the historical drama to the counter-culture era of the '60s, which Bill and Virginia's own research played a part in helping shape the movement.

It is set six years later in 1965, and the series picks up with the issues it left off with in Season 2. However, they have been lapsed into the background, considering the amount of time that has passed.

The season begins with the publishing of Human Sexual Response, which is the revolutionary book that was published by Bill and Virginia, according to a promotional behind the scenes video on Spoilers Guide.

Bill becomes less authoritative, and Virginia becomes more assertive with her position working with Dr. Masters. Libby becomes aware of her husband's sexual proclivities, and she even points out that Virginia is likely having sex with other men, not just Bill.

This all takes place during the sexual revolution, which Virginia publicly claims, "We are the sexual revolution," to a panel of experts that seem to be scrutinizing their work. The sexual revolution seems to be taking a headlining stance in Season 3, and Virginia appears to be at the forefront of it.

Bill is also at the front of the emerging scene, although he still takes an open-minded scientific approach to the events unfolding around him. His groundbreaking research and resulting book have inspired millions, and now, the world is waking up to what human sexual response actually means.

But they are still having funding troubles, due to the sale of the book not generating enough revenue. This leads them to a perfume king, who could possibly take care of their funding issue, but he wants something in return.

Bill and Virginia's research have made breakthroughs, and now that Virginia has finally been able to elevate herself to Bill's status as not just a research assistant but a partner, she takes on more important tasks.

Virginia has also taken a more assertive role in the research, comfortably addressing cantankerous questions that seem to want to discredit them at every turn. She makes brilliant strides at addressing these questions, and her educated responses also seem to earn her the respect of her colleagues and credits alike.

Season 3 premieres on Showtime on July 12 at 10 p.m. EDT.
