Seattle Seahawks star cornerback Richard Sherman has fired back at his New York Jets' counterpart Antonio Cromartie who criticized him last week.

It all started when Cromartie expressed his opinion about Sherman being called the best cornerback in the league. For the Jets' CB, the title should be given to Darelle Revis because he follows the opponent's top receiver in the game.

"Darrelle Revis has done that his whole career. I've done that, Patrick Peterson (Arizona Cardinals) has done it, Joe Haden (Cleveland Browns) has done it. (Sherman is) the only defensive back who hasn't. So there's no point in critiquing him. If you wanna label yourself as the number one, the best cornerback in the NFL, follow the best guy on every single team," Cromartie told SiriusXM NFL Radio last week.

On Tuesday, Sherman told reporters that Cromartie's statement was "unfortunate."

"I think it's one of the things that's just the ignorance of the public. How many great left tackles do you see switching to the right side because there's a great d-end switches to the right side. You don't see it. Great players stay on their side and do what they're supposed to do,' Sherman said, as quoted by NFL.com.

The 27-year-old Hawks player also explained that the strategy clearly works for their team.

"How many guys have you seen switching from side to side on a No. 1 defense? We're the No. 1 defense for a reason. You'd think guys like that wouldn't, who coaches a No. 1 defense to be worse? If we're No. 1, it must be working. It's an effective strategy for us and obviously we're playing at a high level."

The Seahawks is the current best defensive team, according to ESPN. Seattle posted a net total yards of 4,274, averaging 267.1 net yards per game. On the other hand, the New York Jets' currently ranks 6th on the list, having a net total yards of 5,235 with average net yards per game of 327.2.

The Seahawks are the only team with a record of less than 200 passing yards per game and below 300 net yards per game in its 2014 defense stats. Although some fans and analysts - and even cornerbacks - would continue to debate on this topic, the Seahawks' defense clearly stands out.
