2015 Corvette Z06: Has Chevy Delivered a Hit or Stalled Out?
If you thought American muscle was solely dominated by the Dodge SRT Viper you'd be wrong. The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is back and much improved for the 2015 model year. The Z06 delivers a barn-burning 625 plus horsepower and 635 plus pound-feet of torque. The Z06's angular front-fascia is pure business in the front and the intricate, four muffler exhaust system is all performance in the back. This car isn't a mullet; it's a bullet.
CNET says this could be the most track ready Vette ever. General Motors President Mark Reuss called it "the big nasty." Both accounts aren't hyperbole. The numbers don't lie. Checkout this fun fact: the Z06 broke the C6 ZR1's single lap record set at GM's Milford Proving Ground in Milford, Mich. A careful balance of speed, body styling and downforce contributed to the Z06's improved results.
Safety comes first though. Gigantic ceramic disk brakes make sure that all that speed can be tamed fairly quickly. 14.6-inchers sit up front and work in tandem the smaller, but still sizeable 14.4-inchers in the back. To further make sure that the Z06 doesn't rocket off the track, or highway if one's so bold, GM added a lot of aerodynamic features. The most prominent aero feature is the massive hood scoop that practically engulfs the entire front hood. A carbon fiber spoiler in the back adjusts on the fly to deal with various conditions. Deep side scoops adorn the area directly in front of the driver and passenger side front doors.
According to Jalopnik, the Z06 will be available in three trim levels: badass, super badass and seriously dude you want to challenge me to a race models. The officially trim names haven't been released yet, but expect a lot of bang for your buck.
Pricing has yet to be announced, but if you thought the new Stingray was expensive you may want to sit down. The new Z06 is in the same ballpark as previous iterations expect is to be priced in the $70,000 range. Well equipped models may tack on as much as 30 to 40 thousand dollars to the base price.
Watch out, Italy and Germany. Detroit's knocking on your supercar doorstep.
