FIFA Women's World Cup 2015 Scores & Highlights: Germany And Norway Ends In A Draw In Group B Match Up
Two-time World Cup champions Germany conceded a goal in the second half of their match against Norway to end the game in a draw.
The team also known for their moniker Die Nationalelf, or German for "The National Eleven," dominated the first 45 minutes of the game. But a second half equalizer from Norway boosted the team called the "Grasshoppene" to end the game in a draw.
Fresh from a thrashing of Ivory Coast in its first match, which ended in a 10-0 win for the German side, it took only all of six minutes before the World Cup favorite netted a goal to take the lead.
Anja Mittag took the opportunity to chip the ball over Norway's goalkeeper Ingrid Hjelmseth as she failed to take hold of the shot from Dzenifer Mazozsan, reported ESPN. It was Mittag's 37th international goal.
Germany continued to dominate the first half of the match and it was obvious from their play why the team won the 2003 and 2007 World Cup trophies. It continued to be a dangerous opponent until the second half, when Norway was finally able to equalize the game.
It took a free kick from midfielder Maren Mjulde on the 61st minute to even out the playing field for both teams. Germany had more scoring opportunities for the remainder of the second half but was unable to convert at least one more to maintain its lead.
The match ended with a 1-1 score that awarded both teams 1 point each on its tally. The draw leaves both Germany and Norway with 4 points each. However, Germany remains on top of the group in goal difference advantage after it trashed Ivory Coast in its group stages opening match with a 10-0 score.
Norway, on the other hand, defeated Thailand to close at 4-0 goals at the end of the match, which brings them close on Germany's heels in the group stages.
For the whole duration of the game, Germany's dominance was clear from the 27 shots it made on the goal as opposed to Norway's four, noted BBC. Out of those shots, eight were on target while Norway had three.
Norway's final match in the group stages is against Ivory Coast, which will be held in Moncton, while Germany is set to face Thailand in Winnipeg. Both matches are scheduled on Monday.
