Gunman Opens Fire in Iowa Mall, One Dead
An Iowa man from North Liberty was arrested and charged with first-degree murder for allegedly opening fire Friday night at the Coral Ridge Mall and killing a 20-year-old woman.
The suspect, who has been identified as 22-year-old Alexander Matthew Kozak, is currently awaiting an initial appearance in Johnson County District Court.
Police say the victim, who had multiple gunshot wounds, was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where she died. Her name, however, has not been released.
Witnesses say that they heard several shots in the food court area of the popular Coralville mall around 7:30 p.m.
"I was heading toward the food court and heard three gunshots and in 10 seconds everyone was running," said witness Alex Halter of Iowa City, reports Iowa City Press-Citizen.
They said that the gunman then fled. However, he was arrested by troopers with the Iowa State Patrol and Scott County Sheriff's deputies during a traffic stop on Interstate 80, which is about 50 miles from the mall in Davenport, said Iowa Department of Public Safety spokesman Alex Murphy, according to the ABC News.
Ryan Ross, who works at the mall, said he recognized the shooter as a security officer who had been fired earlier that day. Ross also said after he heard the shots fired, he saw the shooter walk near him.
"He made eye contact with me, I saw the gun and he sprinted off" down the main corridor of the mall, Ross said.
Chizom Ekpunobi, 22, also witnessed the shooting and the subsequent chaos.
"They rung out. We heard a couple of shots. At first we thought it was fireworks or the mall falling apart and when we realized what had happened and saw everyone else running out of the mall, we didn't stop to think. We just followed," she said.
