"The Fosters" got into some controversy last season when it featured the youngest ever same-sex kiss to be shown on prime-time TV.

Talking about stirring up the culture on The Wrap, Peter Paige said, “We try not write stories based on reaction. We try to write them based on character integrity as we understand it and observe it.”

The creator of the series maintained that the story that held the controversial kiss rang “very true” to him. Both he and co-creator Bradley Bredeweg responded personally to the coming out scenario on screen, and it felt like an authentic representation of what that time of life was like for them.

“More than anything else, we felt responsibility to those kids and to our younger selves who didn’t see themselves reflected anywhere. … We’ve all been watching stories about heterosexuals forever. … As a gay kid you are always having to translate,” Paige said. "You are always having to pretend like you are one of the other characters. You’re not seeing your life accurately reflected.”

The critically lauded ABC Family series focuses on the triumphs and troubles of an interracial lesbian couple trying to raise a blended family of biological, adopted and foster kids.

Episode 3 of "The Fosters", third season airs on Monday, June 22.
