Microsoft's Xbox One is reportedly the leading next-gen console in the US for the month of December, claims Xbox Wire. The claim is based on the December NPD Group figures.

Xbox Wire points out that both game consoles from Microsoft (Xbox 360 and Xbox One) accounted for "50 percent of the combined software, hardware and accessories spend in the US," translating to a total combined retail spend of $1.39 billion.

Microsoft sold 908,000 units of their next gen console, Xbox One, while sales for their last gen console, Xbox 360, reached 643,000 - both in the month of December alone, the Xbox Wire report said.

According to Venture Beat, although the Xbox One outsold the PS4 in US December retail when it comes to hardware sales, Sony's next gen console still has an overall lead.

"PlayStation 4 remains the cumulative leader for next gen console sales in the U.S. since the launch on November 15. We sold every PS4 available at retail in the U.S. and were out of stock in December due to overwhelming consumer demand," says Dan Rice, Senior Director of Corporate Communications for Sony Computer Entertainment of America in a report by IGN.

Just this month, Sony has announced that the PS4 has sold 4.2 million units worldwide by the end of 2013.

With a $100 price difference, the Xbox One, with its $499.99 price tag, is more expensive than the PS4. Forbes notes that the price difference, coupled with "better on-paper specs" led Sony's next gen console forward.

On the other hand, Microsoft Xbox One versions make up six of the Top 10 New Generation Console Game Title List in the month of December, says Xbox Wire. According to the report, the six game titles are the following: 'Battlefield 4', 'Forza Motorsport 5', 'Dead Rising 3', 'Ryse: Son of Rome', 'Madden NFL 25' and 'Call of Duty: Ghosts.'
