Ian McKellen will not portray Magneto in the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse."

The British actor told the Digital Spy that he had not been called for the part. He said, "I haven't heard, I don't think I am, no, no, they are currently making the film and I'm not in it."

He added, "I was very happy to be a part of the films but I have other things to be doing. I've just done 'Mr. Holmes,' I just done some filming for a sitcom, a film for BBC TV with Anthony Hopkins, so there are compensations for not getting caught up in blockbusters."

McKellen originated the role of Magneto back in 2000 with the first film and played it until 2006 in "X-Men: Last Stand." He later reprised it for the 2014 sequel "X-Men: Days of Future Past." The actor was acclaimed for his portrayal as the villainous mutant.

As McKellen continues to move on in his career, he did note that he has so much respect for the series and thinks it much better than any other comic book films out there.

He said, "I've always thought the X-Men stories were superior, to my taste, to any other fantasy movies because they were about something. I don't think there's much excitement in the wimp who becomes all powerful when he changes his underwear. But X-Men is about what it is to be different, what it is to be a mutant, and society's attitude towards difference and all that. That's an important social thing to discuss."

McKellen is an Oscar-nominated actor who is currently promoting his upcoming film "Mr. Holmes," scheduled for release on July 17.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is slated to star Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, Nicholas Hoult, Oscar Isaac, Tye Sheridan and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The film was directed by Bryan Singer and it is slated to open on May 27, 2016.
