'Ghostbusters' Reboot Plot, Update & Release Date: Slimer Is Back, Cameo Of Bill Murray & Dan Aykroyd Under Negotiation?
"Ghostbusters" is getting a reboot film that will have an all-female cast, but the question is, will the former stars of the original movie return for cameo roles?
Director Paul Feig already revealed that the movie will not be a direct sequel to the first two films and instead will be a remake. But according to a report on the Boston Herald, it seems that the new movie's plot will take in some notes from the original film.
Actresses Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon will take on the roles formerly played by Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson.
Sources from the Herald claimed that Wiig and McCarthy will play the role of two authors who wrote a book about paranormal activity and ghosts. When Wiig accepted a teaching position in Columbia University a few years later, her colleagues found out about it and she was not taken seriously since. She then reunites with McCarthy to take down ghosts that have taken Manhattan.
While this might be the premise, shooting has yet to commence and possible changes can still be made.
It was also reported that green ghost Slimer will return to the movie.
Aside from the iconic ghost, some rumors have come up that Murray and Aykroyd are currently in talks to do a cameo in the upcoming movie.
While it's not yet confirmed that the 62-year-old actor will be seen in the film, Aykroyd has expressed his willingness to be part of it.
"If asked, I will show up and be of service," Aykroyd told Spinoff Online. "If not, it's totally fine with me. I leave powerful talent like that alone to do their thing."
The former "Saturday Night Live" member is excited for the film and hinted that even if the third movie is not a direct continuity to the original two films, there will be reference to it.
"It refers to the first two in a really neat, classy way, but this is all going to introduce them to a whole new generation of girls that are going to want to be Ghostbusters," he added. "We always needed them."
Chris Hemsworth will join the cast as the group's secretary who was called Janine in the original film.
"Ghostbusters" will hit theaters on July 22, 2016.
