When the hit CBS series “Elementary” wrapped up its third season things were looking pretty bleak for our brilliant detective.

Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) had fallen off the wagon big time and Watson (Lucy Liu) announced that Holmes Sr. would be making a trip to the city.

As reported by Spoiler TV, 66-year old Australian born actor John Noble has been cast as Holmes’ estranged and fabulously well-to-do father.

The mysterious character has been referred to a few times in past seasons as the major force behind the dangerously intelligent but seriously flawed detective making an effort at rehab, as well as the brains behind recruiting Joan Watson to act as his “sober companion.”

Robert Doherty, the creator and Executive Producer of the CBS hit, has stated his enthusiasm about the casting, saying: “We could not be more delighted to have John Noble taking on such an important role.”

“We’ve enjoyed his work for many years now – especially his tremendous run on ‘Fringe’ – and cannot wait to see him opposite Jonny and Lucy,” Doherty exclaimed. “It’s going to be an exciting season.”

Aside from “Fringe,” Noble will be a familiar face to watchers of “Sleepy Hollow,” “The Good Wife” and “24.” A veteran of both the small and large screen, Noble is perhaps best known for his role as Denethor in Peter Jackson’s "Lord of The Rings" trilogy.

Speaking to Collider in 2013 about the roles he has chosen over his career, Noble sounded humble.

“A lot of the times, roles are chosen for us, to be honest with you," he said.

“It might be different for people that are A-list actors, but a lot of us really look at what’s offered to us and look for something that has some traction with other people,” Noble said. “I’m a character actor, so as a character actor, I’m always looking for something interesting.”

“Elementary” will start its fourth season on Nov. 5 on CBS.
