Mexico Reacts to Donald Trump Immigrant Bashing: Secretary of Foreign Affairs José Antonio Meade Says Trump Displayed ‘Profound ignorance’
When Donald Trump announced his 2016 presidential campaign on Tuesday, he said that Mexico was no friend of the U.S. and bashed Mexican immigrants, USA Today reports.
In his 45-minute rambling presidential announcement, the Republican presidential candidate made most of the Republican Party cringe with his shocking statements aimed at Latin America -- particularly Mexico. The real estate tycoon said that Mexico and other Latin American countries were "not sending their best" people to the U.S.
"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending the best," Trump said Tuesday in New York City. "They're sending people that have lots of problems and they're bringing those problems. They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime. They're rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they're telling us what we're getting."
He went on to say that the U.S. has "become a dumping ground for everybody else's problems." His solution? Erect an impenetrable wall along the U.S.'s southern border financed by Mexico.
"I will build a great, great wall on our southern border," Trump said in his speech, "and I will have Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words."
The reality TV star's criticism toward Latin Americans were heard loud and clear around the world. Mexico's El Universal newspaper declared that Trump had "lashed out" at Mexicans, while Argentina's Clarín newspaper reported that he believes Mexicans are invading the U.S. and burdening the American society.
Miguel Ángel Osorio, Mexico's secretary of the interior, told reporters after an anti-discrimination event in Mexico City that Trump ignored the fact that the U.S. was built by the hard work of immigrants from around the world.
José Antonio Meade, Mexico's secretary of foreign affairs, said on Wednesday that Trump displayed "profound ignorance."
Trump's lambasting of Mexicans shocked many, especially Rob Schneider, whose daughter is half-Mexican.
While likely aimed at a specific set of voters, the speech will probably drive away some Latinos from him.
