White Man Threatens to Kill Black Members of a Virginia Church [Video]
A white man was arrested Thursday night for shouting racial slurs and threatening to kill black congregants gathered inside a church in Richmond, Virginia.
Bishop Oren Pullings told local broadcaster WRIC that the raving white man began threatening worshippers at the United Nations Church International around 8:45 p.m., after they had gathered for a Bible study session. Witnesses say that he was banging on a door and threatening to kill the people inside, while yelling racial slurs, including the N-word.
In a cellphone video, the man, who has not been identified, is seen cursing at churchgoers while standing and pounding on a door. The congregants can also be heard in the video frantically yelling "Lock all the doors!"
The man called the church members "n-----s" and said, "I'm gonna kill all you and all you are gonna get killed tonight," and, "You're taking over," church members said, according to The New York Daily News.
After he was locked out, a security officer drew her gun on him to restrain him until police arrived. Once police arrived on the scene, the man was taken into custody and brought to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation. Police Capt. Chris Gleason said that he will be held there for 72 hours.
"All I know is he had a weapon in his hand, banging on the glass, and calling us n----rs," the senior pastor, Bishop Pullings, told WRIC.
"I never thought I'd see the day when police have to be at church," Capt. Gleason told the congregation after the arrest, reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
The members of the church believed the man was armed with a knife or machete, but police confirmed that he was carrying "a big piece of plastic that looked like a weapon," Gleason said.
Fortunately, no one was hurt. However, it is not known if he will face any charges.
The incident occurred one day after a mass shooting took place in a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina. During the shooting, a white male identified as 21-year-old Dylann Roof opened fire at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church around 9 p.m. while the church members were praying. Altogether nine people were killed, including the church's pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, 41. Three people survived.
