Liam Payne just keeps tweeting himself into trouble.

Not long after drawing in criticism from fans and critics alike for posting a photo of him being "suicidal" on a ledge, the One Direction star is back in the news for tweeting support of the outspoken homophobes of Duck Dynasty. According to The Huffington Post, it all started yesterday when the teen heartthrob tweeted his support of the Robertson clan to Willie Robertson, the son of Phil Robertson, who was suspended by A&E after GQ Magazine published his remarks against gay and black people.

In the tweet, Payne commended Robertson for his support of "family values" and said he was a "big fan." Not surprisingly, according to Yahoo!, fans of the band responded quickly. Tyler Oakley, who is one of the band's well-known supporters, publicly declared that he was rethinking his stance after Payne's comment. "I'm okay with losing followers over this; I'd rather give LGBT teens support than look the other way & accept bigotry to appease a fanbase," he wrote.

"Backlash to the tweet was swift, with One Direction fans rallying to Payne's defense and gay rights supporters denouncing him. As of 7 p.m., the tweet had been retweeted more than 10,000 times," writes The Huffington Post. Many of the One Direction fans came out in support of the LGBT community, calling Payne's support of the Robertson clan "disgusting" and branding Payne a homophobe.

Of course, there were also obligatory comments about how the members of One Direction themselves are gay, but who are so deep in the closet that they can see Narnia. And, because of their behavior, it would make sense that they would come out in support of a noted homophobe. Payne, upon seeing this, quickly sent out a clarifying tweet to try to re-explain his stance. "Being a fan of someone's show and the way they still hold a family together doesnt mean i am ok with all they say," he wrote. He later took to the Irish Independent to vent his frustrations about the backlash, claiming that he's "sick of people making up stories."

Insofar as Payne being a fan of Duck Dynasty, it looks like he is one of a shrinking few: after months of negative publicity surrounding the elder Robertson's comments, the show's season premiere only had 8.5 million viewers, a sharp decline from the viewership from the same time last year.
