Governor Andrew Cuomo helped in kicking off Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in New York City this weekend after delivering a special weekend speech at Al Sharpton's headquarters.

There are a number of events and service projects available for participants and volunteers who are looking to stay busy on the special day of remembrance this Monday.

Starting in Brooklyn on Monday morning, author and professor Angela Davis will be the keynote speaker at a special Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute ceremony. Jazz artist José James and the BCCC Singers of the Brooklyn Christian Cultural Center will be providing the musical performances at the event.

Meanwhile, in Manhattan, "More Than A Dream: A Celebration of Dr. King" will take place at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. According to Newsday, Vocalist Milton Suggs will be celebrating the holiday with jazz, soul, and R&B. The event will take place at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola located at Broadway at 60 street. However, it will come at a price -- $25 will get you in the doors, unless you're a student, which means you'll only be required to pay $10.

New York City is not the only metro area that will be hosting these events. According to Boston Magazine, the nationwide celebration of Martin Luther King Day will also take place in Boston, where there will be open houses and service events. The Museum of Fine Arts will be free for all on MLK Day and will have a new "Samba Spirit" exhibit.

Also, "Many Helping Hands 365" will be hosting the annual MLK Day of Service. People can make scarves and blankets as well as Valentines Day cards for veterans and elderly people. To participate in this free event, go to 795 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square, Cambridge.
