Mark Zuckerberg, Wife Priscilla Chan Donate $5 Million to Undocumented Immigrants College Fund
Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg has donated $5 million to TheDream.us college scholarship fund aimed at helping undocumented immigrants attend college.
Zuckerberg posted news of his and his wife Priscilla Chan's gift on Facebook, where he added, "America was founded as a nation of immigrants. We ought to welcome smart and hardworking young people from every nation, and to help everyone in our society achieve their full potential."
According to USA Today, the program is specifically designed for students who came here to the U.S. as children with no authorization and now wish to pursue a higher education. The program offers grants of up to $25,000 for "Dreamers" attending four-year institutions and up to half of that for those working toward earning an associate degree.
Originally founded in 2013 by Graham Holdings CEO Donald Graham and several others including former Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez, since its launch the program has already partnered with dozens of colleges to award scholarships to deserving immigrant students.
In his statement, Zuckerberg went on to add that this is but a small step in his overall plan to change the landscape for deserving immigrant students.
According to the Huffington Post, to be eligible Dreamers must have "the ability to stay in the U.S. under the Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals program, called DACA, or Temporary Protected Status."
It is estimated that Zuckerberg's donation will allow more than 400 students living in the San Francisco Bay Area to receive a secondary education. Over the years, Zuckerberg has become known as an advocate for immigration reform.
In 2013, he co-founded FWD.US, an organization created to "mobilize the tech community to support policies" that pave the way for immigrants to be afforded equal opportunities. A year later, he and Chan made a donation of $120 million to underprivileged schools in the Bay Area.
