'Hellboy 3' Release Date & Rumors: Ron Perlman Talks About Long-Awaited Sequel
Ever since "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" came out in 2008, fans of the fictional demon hero have been looking forward to see what's next for him and his other quirky friends. It seems that actor Ron Perlman is among those who are eager to conclude the series that began with the first film in 2004.
The 65-year-old actor played the titular character in both movies directed and written for the big screen by Guillermo Del Toro.
Reports of the upcoming third film came about when Perlman took to social networking site, Twitter, to ask support from the fans of the movies to raise awareness for the film.
"Anybody out there wanna see #HellboyIII as much as I do? Let's get this muthaf***a trending, y'all! Let's end the trilogy; we earned it," posted the actor.
Since then, the post has been retweeted more than 20,000 times.
The actor has recently spoken with Digital Spy to express his desire to film another movie as Hellboy. While he admitted that as of the moment, there is no news of the movie being in development, he is keen to reprise his role the soonest possible time otherwise he might have to shoot the film while "in a wheelchair." He also discussed why he is not in favor of crowdfunding the film. For the actor, "it's not the fans' job to fund a movie."
In another interview with Variety, Perlman revealed that the movie was supposed to "have a beginning, a middle and an end" and the actor hinted of what is supposed to be the plot of "Hellboy 3" should it start production soon.
"There will come a time where he will have to live up his destiny, which is to be the best of the apocalypse, or if he has to suppress that destiny by sacrificing himself in some way so as not to destroy mankind but do the opposite," said Perlman. "And that's the discussion of the third film; I think it's a discussion worth having."
The "Hand of God" actor also believes that the third movie will be "mind-blowing."
He added that the script to the third movie, while not yet written, has been in Del Toro's mind for some time.
"And he's shared enough of it with me to know that it will be mind-blowing," said Perlman. "It will be great cinema."
In 2014, Del Toro held a Reddit AMA where he revealed that while the destiny of Hellboy has yet to be resolved in a third film, the director does not "think it will happen" due to financing issues and lack of interest from studios.
Until "Hellboy 3" gets the funding it needs, then fans of the franchise will just have to hold their breath to see Perlman portray the demonic hero once again.
