Man Shot Down in Florida Theater By Former Police Captain
Chad Oulson was shot dead by Curtis Reeves at a Florida movie theater following a dispute over texting on last Monday evening, according to authorities. Reeves was charged with second-degree murder in the death of the 43-year-old, which took place at a theater in Wesley Chapel, a suburb that's half-hour north of downtown Tampa.
Sheriff's Detective Allen Proctor stated that Reeves verbalized dismay over Oulson's cell phone usage during the previews, then left his seat to inform management of the disturbance. When he returned, the two had a hostile exchange of words, at which point Oulson threw popcorn at Reeves.
Reeves, a retired police captain and Busch Garden's security officer, indicated that Oulson struck him in the face with an unknown object, which prompted Reeves to withdraw his .380 caliber gun from his pants. He fired the gun once, striking Oulson in the chest and piercing Oulson's wife's hand, who was attempting to shield her husband. Reeves claimed that he shot Oulson because he "was in fear of being attacked."
Lone Survivor's 25-person audience witnessed the shooting, including a man by the name of Charles Cummings, a combat Marine in Vietnam.
"I can't believe people would bring a pistol, a gun, to a movie," said Cummings, who was sitting near Oulson and Reeves. "I can't believe they would argue and fight and shoot one another over popcorn. Over a cellphone."
Cummings was at the theater with his son, and when Oulson was shot, he fell onto him and his son, leaving blood on their clothes. Cummings' son left to call 911, while Cummings and another movie-goer performed CPR. An off-duty deputy from another county who was seated beside Reeves, grabbed the gun from his hand, and forbade him from getting away.
Oulson and his wife were taken to a Tampa-area hospital, where Chad Oulson died.
Reeves' confrontation with Oulson was not his first altercation at that movie theater complex. According to Michael and Jamira Dixon, the 71-year-old was "bothered by everything" at a showing of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug two weeks ago. They stated that he never used foul language at them, but angrily glared at the couple, their three children and a niece.
More than 120 theaters have already moved to ban handguns, plastering posters that display their zero weapons policy on their front door. Nonetheless, theater violence is not new -- particularly after the shooting massacre that left 12 dead in Aurora, Colo. less than two years ago.
Reeves identified Oulson as the "aggressor," and attempted to use Florida's "stand your ground" defense.
A trust fund has been established to assist Oulson's family. The 43-year-old was survived by his wife and his two-year-old daughter.
