Roxana Rodriguez was rushed to the hospital with stomach pains in Rieti, Italy. This normally wouldn't be headline news... except for the fact that she was a nun in the Franciscan order, and the stomach pains turned out to be labor contractions, resulting in a baby boy named Francis (after the current Pope).

According to the Daily Mail, the 33-year-old nun is a novitiate with the Little Disciples of Jesus, and told her Mother Superior that she had no idea she was pregnant. Obviously, with the birth of Francis, Roxana violated the vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience that all nuns (and priests, for that matter) take. Rodriguez, however, isn't concerned, and is a proud mother.

"I am so happy. I feel more of a mother than a nun, I think that's obvious. I decided to call him Francis in honour of our wonderful south American Pope. I do not feel of guilt. I will be keeping him and bringing him up. He is a gift from God. I am little worried about all the publicity, not only in Italy but in El Salvador and all over the world. Everyone is talking about this and I don't think I will be able to return to my home country, let alone Rieti," The Mail said she told her social worker.

But there was no miracle in the manger for this birth, according to The Examiner. Rodriguez went home to El Salvador nine months ago to renew her passport and "couldn't resist temptation," according to one of her fellow novitiates. But now, however, the "little miracle" caused his mother a lot of problems. "Because she was unaware that she was pregnant, she had nothing ready to care for this baby. The other mothers and hospital staff rallied together and donated baby items to the nun. Now that she is a 'fallen nun,' her future is uncertain. She cannot remain as a nun because she has given birth. Where she will go from here is not known. The father of this baby is unknown and not in the picture," reports The Examiner.

Regardless, congratulations are in order for the new mother and baby Francis. Hopefully some good can come out of this quagmire!
