Diego Maradona could be the next president of FIFA.

According to the San Francisco Gate, Diego Maradona is planning to run for FIFA. Victor Hugo Morales, who is Maradona's close friend, confirmed on Twitter that Maradona is indeed a candidate.

"I called Diego Maradona to see how his father was," Morales tweeted in Spanish. "He told me that he would be a candidate for FIFA's president, and I was authorized to let people know."

According to Goal, Maradona wasn't interested in running for president of FIFA. Instead. he wanted to be vice president under fellow candidate Prince Ali bin Hussein, who is the favorite to land the job. Hussein persuaded 73 football associations to support him in the first round of voting.

If Maradona wins the presidency, it could make FIFA a bit more interesting. Considered to be the best soccer player to ever grace a soccer field, Maradona is a World Cup winner who starred for the likes of Barcelona and Napoli during his playing days.

However, he spent decades dealing with a cocaine addiction and was banished from the 1994 World Cup in disgrace after testing positive for doping, while his Hand of God goal is one of the most infamous in history.

Although he was the coach for the 2010 Argentina Soccer World Cup Team, he couldn't escape the controversy. For instance, in April he was filmed taking a swipe at a steward and smashing a camera phone out of a reporter's hand as he stormed about the pitch in the aftermath of a charity match.

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter announced this month that he would be stepping down after being elected for a fifth four-year presidential term amid a U.S. probe into $150 million in bribes allegedly paid to top soccer officials.
