Kraft Velveeta Mac and Cheese Recall: Incident Not Related to #Cheesepocalypse
Truitt Brothers Inc. is recalling 1.77 million pounds of Kraft Velveeta products after failing to label ingredients as allergens, U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reports.
According to a press release by FSIS, Truitt Brothers Inc. did not declare hydrolyzed soy protein and dried soy sauce as allergens in its products.
"The inaccurate labeling is the only thing wrong with the product," Joyce Hodel, Kraft Foods spokeswoman, told CNN. "If an individual has no allergies or sensitivities to soy, then the product is perfectly safe to consume."
The recall is only for "3.3-pound cases containing six, 9-ounce microwaveable containers of 'Kraft Velveeta Cheesy Skillets SINGLES - ULTIMATE CHEESEBURGER MAC' ... with a Used By/Sell By date code of "02 MARCH 2014 - 23 OCT 2014," the press release says.
No other of Kraft or Velveeta cheesy products are affected by the recall.
"That's because they contain soy, but soy is not listed in the ingredient line or in the allergen declaration on some packages," a Kraft spokesperson told Los Angeles Times. "No other Kraft or Velveeta products are affected by this recall."
About 525,000 cases of Velveeta single-serve dinners are affected. According to FSIS, Truitt Brothers Inc. was doing a routine quality check when the company noticed the error and contacted FSIS.
"The company believes the problem occurred when a label supplier inadvertently mixed labels with incorrect ingredient lines with labels containing correct ingredient information," the release says.
Truitt Brothers Inc. is based in East Bernstady, Ky.
"We're looking into what led to this error so we can ensure it doesn't happen again. We sincerely apologize as we know consumers rely on the proper labeling of our products," Truitt Brothers Inc. said via its VELVEETA Facebook page, adding that the incident is not related to #Cheesepocalypse, or a shortage of Velveeta products around Super Bowl time.
