The Season 8 finale of "The Big Bang Theory" ended with a major cliffhanger as Sheldon and Amy's slow-moving relationship seem to come to a shocking end just before it appeared as though Sheldon was planning to propose to her.

After dating for years, Amy told Sheldon in the finale that she was fed up and frustrated with the lack of growth in their relationship and needed space.

"Being your girlfriend is so challenging, emotionally, physically," Amy told Sheldon via video chat. "This isn't easy to say because I love you, but I need some time to take a step back and reevaluate our situation. I hope you understand."

Devastated by the breakup, Sheldon began talking to the Gollum figurine on his desk and pulled out an engagement ring he planned to give Amy. Although fans were shocked by the couple's breakup, series star Mayim Bialik hinted that this may not be the last chapter for Amy and Sheldon's awkward romance.

During a recent interview with The L.A. Times, Bialik opened up about what she describes as the "double-shocker" season finale.

When questioned about Sheldon's ring, Bialik cautioned fans not to jump to conclusions.

"We don't really know what the story is with that ring," Bialik says. "And I think that's something I had to remember as an actor. We don't know what he was planning to do with it. We don't know if it was something he got from his mother. We don't know what the process was by which he acquired that and what he would think to do with it."

The actress went on to say that viewers are making assumptions because it's "super-exciting to do so." Bialik also recognizes that the fans have followed the characters are love them.

"But the neat thing about our show ... and Jim and my character's relationship is that anything can happen. And I think the finale was proof of that," she said.

She added that as of now, "only Gollum knows" about Sheldon's original intention for the ring.
