Fox News has parted ways with former Republican vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Networks executives confirmed to Politico on Wednesday that they formally split with Palin on June 1 by declining to renew her contract. The 51-year-old burst on the national scene in 2008 when she was somewhat surprisingly selected by Arizona Sen. John McCain as his running mate on the 2008 GOP ticket for the White House.

Since the pair's loss to Barack Obama, Palin's rhetoric-filled and controversial statements have become a staple across the Fox Network platform.

According to Politico, she is still expected to make occasional guest appearances on Fox Business and perhaps other networks. Palin also has a show on the Sportsman Channel and has recently hinted about another upcoming publishing project.

At her height, Palin was viewed as a must-have voice by Fox execs, who once installed a camera at her Alaskan home. Nowadays, she is widely seen as far less relevant and her appearances were sometimes hampered by wide time differences between Alaska and other parts of the country.

Still, Palin remains a favorite among conservatives on social media, with some 4.5 million fans on Facebook, twice the number of followers of leading GOP 2016 candidate Rand Paul. She also has 1.15 million Twitter followers.

As of midnight Wednesday, Palin's Facebook page took on a new look, including a new cover photo with a quote from her announcement speech in Dayton, Ohio: "I didn't get into government to do the safe and easy things. A ship in harbor is safe but that's not why the ship is built."

Reports say the plan now calls for Palin to remain heavily involved in GOP congressional and gubernatorial primaries for the upcoming 2016 cycle. This week, her SarahPAC operation is expected to donate to over 40 candidates.
