Winter Olympics in Sochi 2014: New Terrorist Threat Emerges; Is It Safe To Attend? [POLL]
New terror threats are emerging in Russia just weeks before the official beginning of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
According to CNN, wanted posters targeting a terrorist suspect have been posted in the area and there was also a threatening video that was released. Two men warned that they would be taking action if the Olympics were held.
"We've prepared a present for you and all tourists who'll come over," the video says. "If you will hold the Olympics, you'll get a present from us for the Muslim blood that's been spilled."
U.S. Senator Angus King, who is part of the Senate Intelligence Committee, elaborated upon the reasons behind the government's warnings to the American people.
"It's a very serious fear because the Olympics are being held in an area where there's a history of terrorist activity, where there's been a lot of tension between Islamists in that area and the government of Russia," King said.
Despite the growing concerns about safety, Russian President Vladimir Putin has downplayed it. He reassured people around the world that the games will be beefed up with security and that there is nothing to worry about.
"We will try to make certain that the security measures are not intrusive or too conspicuous, so they are not too noticeable for the athletes, the Olympics' guests or journalists," Putin said
The United States is bringing two warships to the area near the Olympic Games in case of an emergency. If something were to happen, the ships would be responsible for providing a safe space for Americans to evacuate to.
