Brooklyn MCs and Epic Records artists Bobby Shmurda and Rowdy Rebel appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday as their trial was set to begin Oct. 5, reports XXL magazine. The two will be tried as well as four other defendants on charges resulting from a 101-count indictment imposed by the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for New York City.

On Thursday, prosecutors recommended seven years in prison for Rebel, whose real name is Chad Marshall, and eight years for Shmurda, whose real name Ackquille Pollard.

After the hearing, Shmurda's attorney Kenneth Montgomery seemed satisfied.

"I'm surprised by the recommendation," he told XXL. "Especially as they've been dragging these kids up here like they're Public Enemy No. 1."

"I thought it was reasonable," Rebel's attorney Javier Solano told XXL following the hearing. "Usually they're heavy-handed."

Shmurda and Rebel were arrested the morning of Dec. 17, 2014 outside of Quad Studios in Manhattan. Fourteen members of GS9 -- the street gang linked to several shootings -- were also arrested. All of the defendants were indicted on more than 60 various counts, including conspiracy, murder, assault, drug and weapons charges following an NYPD investigation. The defendants were handed a superseding indictment in January that increased the total number of counts in the case to more than 100.

Montgomery said Shmurda and Rebel's trial could last "up to two months."

The remaining defendants will have their next court date Sept. 16, according to XXL. Some have already been offered plea deals or recommendations from the prosecution, but nothing has been finalized to date.

Shmurda, 24, plead not guilty in December. If found innocent, he will have spent more than a year in jail. He barely was able to enjoy the success of his breakout single "Hot N***a" that gained popularity last June though Vine. The track led to a record deal with Epic and made its way to No. 6 on Billboard's Hot 100 by November.

The "Hot Boy" rapper has been in more trouble while in jail. He was allegedly involved in a jail fight in May. He was arrested on June 23 for receiving a "sharpened metal instrument" on June 21.
