It's about time! The Moto X second generation is finally getting Android 5.1 Lollipop in the U.S. There are, as always, caveats.

So the Moto X is definitely getting Android 5.1 Lollipop, because it came straight from the mouth (i.e., fingers) of Motorola's David Schuster on his Google Plus page (via Ubergizmo):

"I am happy to announce that we have been approved to start full deployment of the Android 5.1 Lollipop upgrade for Moto X (2nd Gen) Pure Edition in the U.S."

Keen-eyed viewers will already see the big caveat: This is for Moto X 2nd Generation "Pure Edition" devices. Chances are you bought the Moto X 2014 through a carrier like AT&T. Unless you specified your purchase for the Pure Edition Moto X 2014, you won't be getting Lollipop 5.1 on your unpure Moto X.

But with this Moto X Lollipop update going OTA you'll be relieved to know that carrier adaptations tend to follow just a couple to a few weeks after the initial rollout.

You may wonder why it has (and is still, for most) taking so long to update from Android 5.0.2 Lollipop to Android 5.1 Lollipop. After all, the Moto X 2014 edition was the first after the Nexus 6 to upgrade from KitKat to Lollipop, way back in late 2014.

And yet the next tiny jump was stuck in limbo for a while, due to some nasty bugs Motorola ran into -- resulting in multiple "soak tests" (or small-market runs) of the Android 5.1 Lollipop OTA update.

Those are done now, so it's only a matter of time (and standard carrier-specific testing) before everyone gets the improved bug-free (fingers crossed!) Android 5.1 Lollipop on their Moto X 2014. Who know, by then, the new edition may be out.
