Wimbledon 2015 Schedule & Live Stream: Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams in Action in Day 1
Defending champion Novak Djokovic, five-time winner Serena Williams and one-time champion Maria Sharapova all return in action to the grass court in London for the opening day of Wimbledon 2015.
The 28-year old Serbian is set to open the matches per Wimbledon tradition at the Centre Court with a game against No. 33 Philipp Kohlschrieber. The match-up is the eighth time the two will face each other with Djokovic dominating majority of the time.
However, the German is not a player to be easily dismissed. He won against the Serbian defending champion in 2009 at the French Open, reported Sports Illustrated. Aside from that, he also gave 17-time Grand Slam titles holder Roger Federer a difficult time at the Halle Open in a close match that ended 7-6(8), 3-6, 7-6(5) with the Swiss ending up victorious.
While Djokovic has the advantage coming into the tournament as the No. 1 seed, the player was absent in the usual pre-tournament practices that made many of his fans concerned of his chances in Wimbledon.
The defending champion revealed his reason and it was because he needed to prepare fully for the upcoming tournament.
"Roland Garros final was not easy," Djokovic admitted to Los Angeles Times. "I needed some time to just mentally recover."
Meanwhile, Serena Williams will open the matches for the women's division in a game against No. 113 Maragarita Gasparyan at the No.1 Court.
The top seed is looking to win her sixth Wimbledon title this year and will be three-quarters close to achieving another Grand Slam should she succeed.
"There's a part of me that believes I can still do it," said Williams to BBC Sport. "But it's definitely not easy to do."
The current Australian and French Open champion revealed that she is not at all "pressured" to achieve all the "Slams" there is for the year but is just focused on finishing well in the tournament.
"I want to win Wimbledon and I want to win it probably more than most people would ever want to win it," she added.
On the other hand, No. 4 seed Maria Sharapova will be on her way early for her quest to get her second Wimbledon title.
The Russian will play against Johanna Konta at the Centre Court immediately after the men's opening game on Monday.
While Sharapova can easily breeze through the first match, the British player is not to be undermined. Konta showed true potential for an upset as she reached the quarterfinals in Eastbourne just last week.
The 28-year-old Russian was unable to join the pre-tournament matches due to ill health and had to undergo some tests.
"It took a little while for me to really refresh and recover, and yeah, give myself just a chance to feel good again and get back to work," admitted Sharapova to Steve G Tennis.
