A family fishing trip in Texas took a frightening turn on Sunday when a dad and his teenage son were viciously attacked by an alligator.

The incident occurred at Lake Charlotte at the Cedar Hill Park in Wallisville when 13-year-old Kaleb Hurley was swimming near the bank. Witnesses say Kaleb was in waist deep water when an alligator came up and bit his arm, pulling him under, reported the Houston Chronicle.

Kaleb's father and grandfather quickly ran into the lake to save the boy from the alligator, which was described as six-to-eight-feet long.

"Kaleb told his mother something had a hold of him," said Mark Ford, the boy's grandfather, according to USA Today. "When we figured out what was going on, the alligator jerked Kaleb away from him. His dad and I got a hold of Kaleb and got him away from the alligator."

However, after they managed to free Kaleb's arm from the animal's jaws, the gator snapped at his father, 42-year-old James Hurley, and bit his leg. Fortunately, the father kicked the alligator until it finally let him go.

The father and son were then flown by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where they were said to be in serious but stable condition, reports WFAA.

John Willey, one of the two paramedics who were the first arrived on the scene, said, "We approached the scene and got everybody to calm down a little bit and figured out what was going on."

"He did something I would do as a father myself. My hats off to him," added paramedic Ovielo Ocanas. "He went and defended his son."

According to Sheriff Brian Hawthorne of the Chambers County Sheriff's Office, many alligators who have been displaced by recent flooding are using the lake for a nesting period.
