Man Dies After Being Set Ablaze Outside Long Beach 7 Eleven
63-year-old Long Beach resident Jerry Payne has died after being set on fire at his local 7-11 store on Friday. After three days in the hospital he was pronounced dead Monday morning.
The attack occurred at a little after 5 p.m. at the corner of Clark Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway. Authorities arrived soon after to find that the man had been set on fire inside his vehicle after being doused with a flammable substance.
Several people rushed to help Payne after he was attacked, but not before he suffered significant burns all over his body. Payne's car was completely engulfed in flames when police arrived.
"The vehicle went up in flames immediately, just totally engulfed. It was all flames," said one witness. "It became so hot in the 7-Eleven that I moved towards the back of the store because I thought the windows were going to blow."
Long beach police are currently looking for at least three people who witnessed the attack outside of 7-11. There has yet to be a motive established for the seemingly random act of violence.
"There are several witnesses to this horrific crime that have yet to come forward," police officials said in a statement.
Police have taken one man into custody so far. Raymond Clark, a 38-year-old homeless man who lives in the vicinity, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and for two outstanding warrants. Authorities say they will file charges this week.
This is not the first time a man has been randomly set ablaze in Long Beach. Last October a man was sitting out by the 200 block of Pacific Coast Highway when he was struck by a bottle filled with flammable liquid. There was no motive in that attack either.
