In the beginning, there was Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). Their initial bouts on the big-screen were legendary and Oscar worthy. But following Creed's death after he became good friends with Balboa in "Rocky IV," his legacy seemed to fade away in the franchise.

But now, Creed's son, Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), has risen up in the cinematic boxing world and become a serious contender for the current line of heavyweights, according to Variety.

In the new trailer for this 7th installment in the "Rocky" franchise, Creed is the new headliner as Balboa takes a backseat to the young star's emerging fame and title contention.

Fans will get to see iconic recreations of the new heavyweight pulling the same strings that Balboa did in his early years, which the franchise started in the late '70s and kept rolling through the '80s.

Creed is seen in the trailer training in Philadelphia and undergoing the same "working-class" attributes that Balboa did, which includes running through neighborhood streets with a crowd following him.

The trailer also reveals that young Creed never got an opportunity to know his father before he died in the ring to a Russian heavyweight (Dolph Lundgren) during an exhibition match. The film took place during the waning days of the Cold War and seemed to lend credence to the emerging victory over the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Jordan, who also stars in the new "Fantastic Four" film, will be seeking out Balboa in the film, who will play a minor role as a mentor. The film will also star Tessa Thompson ("Dear White People") as young Creed's love interest.

The film has recast Apollo Creed's wife and the role is now played by Phylicia Rashad ("The Cosby Show"). In the original movies, the role was portrayed by actresses Lavelle Roby and Sylvia Meals.

Jordan made headlines with his non-fiction film "Fruitvale Station," which garnered award-winning buzz.
