Apple iOS 8.4 Glitches: How is New Update Affecting Home Sharing on Devices?
The update to Apple iOS 8.4 is causing some users to become frustrated with a feature that seems to have disappeared. Home Sharing, a feature in iTunes that allows users to stream music from their iPhones, iPods and iPads to their computers,no longer available on most devices according to Apple Insider.
With the update to iOS 8.4, Apple has updated its Home Sharing support page to reflect that Home Sharing is no longer available on iOS devices. It will still be available on the Apple TV.
The advantage of Home Sharing was that it allowed multiple devices to be connected to a home computer and allowed for that computer to stream all of the media on those devices.
Home Sharing has been around since 2011, and it came as a part of iOS 4.3.
During the betas for iOS 8.4, Home Sharing was listed in the known issues as being "not currently available." This led many to believe that it would be fixed in time for the full release of iOS 8.4. Now, the only way to use Home Sharing is with desktops that share a network with Apple TV.
If there are several iOS devices in the same household, there is only one real solution for them to share their music, through an Apple Music subscription. The $14.99 Family Plan will allow up to six devices to share their Apple Music catalog with each other. However, users with lots of songs that are not available on Apple Music will no longer be able to easily share their content with other users in the same household.
The Home Sharing feature may be done with because Apple might think that users would avoid paying for the $14.99 Family Plan and instead use the Home Sharing feature to share their iTunes music with their family.
The removal of this feature has led many former users of Home Sharing to complain on social media, according to the Inquirer.
