'Empire' Season 2 Spoilers: Marisa Tomei Joins Cast as Billionaire Hip-Hop Lover
Academy Award-winning actress Marisa Tomei is set to join the cast of "Empire" for the upcoming second season.
Entertainment Weekly reports the "My Cousin Vinny" star has been cast as the recurring role of Mimi Whiteman, described as a Forbes list billionaire venture capitalist who "loves hip-hop, fashion and beautiful women."
Tomei joins a growing list of big-name stars set to appear on screen during the Fox Network smash hit's second season. After Jennifer Hudson and Courtney Love guest starred in last season, Chris Rock, Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz and Adam Rodriguez have already been confirmed for next time around.
In addition, the show is slated to increase from 12 to 18 episodes next season and be split between the fall and winter seasons.
Show co-creator Lee Daniels recently posted pics on Instagram of Rock appearing on the set with series co-star Terrence Howard (Lucious Lyon) for several upcoming jailhouse scenes. At the end of Season 1, the volatile and edgy Lucious was jailed on an array of charges related to the family's music business.
According to Entertainment Weekly, with every episode last season, "Empire" grew its audience. The show ended up wrapping the year with 16.7 million viewers for finale and good ratings within the all-important 18-49 demographic.
The show also stars Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon, Jussie Smollett as Jamal Lyon, Trai Byers as Andre Lyon, Bryshere Y. Gray as Hakeem Lyon, Kaitlin Doubleday as Rhonda Lyon and Anika Calhoun as Grace Gealey.
For Season 2, there have also been rumblings that Oprah Winfrey and Denzel Washington could guest star as well. Winfrey previously worked with Daniels on the film "The Butler," which he directed.
"Empire" has also signed perennial hit-maker Ne-Yo to write new original music for Season 2 with the help of hip-hop legend Timbaland.
Season 2 premieres on Sept. 23.
