Driveway Childbirth: Maine Woman Delivers Her Own Baby; Names Child After Which Famous Racecar Driver?
Imagine new father Joseph Cain's surprise when he came out of his house Friday morning to find out that his wife had delivered their baby by herself in the driveway, while leaning on the car in sub-zero temperatures.
That's exactly what happened -- Cain had gone inside to get the last of his wife's bags as they prepared to drive to the hospital to deliver the baby when wife Abigail Cain went into labor.
Abigail's husband had just called her parents to say that they were on the way to the hospital. It was 5:10 in the morning at temperatures were well below zero. Then he went into the house while his wife stayed on the phone, but eventually hung up because she went into labor.
Abigail's father said later that "At the first contraction, she started laying on the horn for her husband to hurry up, With the second contraction, she felt she had to push. She pushed and the baby came out while she was standing next to the car."
Apparently when Joseph came out of the house with the bag he heard a crying that didn't sound like his two year old son Tristan. When he laid eyes on his wife, she was holding their newborn child and said "I have the baby! I have the baby!" Then they called for an ambulance and went to the hospital.
The baby was overdue since Jan. 18 and was finally delivered at 5:18 a.m. Friday. The child weighed a healthy 7 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 20.25 inches long. They named her Danica after race car driver Danica Patrick.
Moms can do amazing things for their kids and this is no exception. "Abby had a doctor appointment yesterday, and the doctor said her baby would be here any time," her father said. Congratulations, Abigail!
