Netflix is perhaps the most well-known and successful providers of streaming on-demand films and series, offering thousands of titles to more than 33.1 million subscribers in the U.S. alone. The website delivers films and television series in a number of languages and in every known genre. The website even hosts a collection of Hollywood favorites and hidden treasures that show Latinos as lead supporting actors and actresses.
Like Water for Chocolate / Como agua para chocolate (1992): The film, based on the classic novel of the same name, is about the passionate love between a young woman by the name of Tita and a young man named Pedro. Her controlling mother forbids her from marrying the man that she loves, so Pedro marries her sister so that he can remain close to Tita. Tita is able to deposit her emotions into her food, transforming dinner time into a display of emotions. West Side Story (1961): The award-winning cinematic treasure is based on the Broadway production of the same name, and is inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The musical film was directed by Robert Wise and Robbins, and stars Puerto Rican Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Academy Award winner Rita Moreno, as well as Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn. The film won ten Academy Awards out of eleven nominations, including Best Picture.
Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001): The film tells the story of two teenage boys who venture on a road trip with a woman in her late 20s.The sensual coming-of-age film was directed, co-written, and produced by Golden Globe winner Alfonso Cuarón, and stars Mexican actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, and Spanish actress Maribel Verdú.
Filly Brown (2012): Directed by Youssef Delara and Michael D. Olmos, the film stars Puerto Rican actress Gina Rodriguez as Majo Tenero and the late Jenni Rivera as her mother. Rodriguez appears in the film as an aspiring rapper.
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012): The quirky independent comedy stars Puerto Rican actress Aubrey Plaza as a "disillusioned college graduate" who works with a team of journalists looking to find out who's behind a classified ad that seeks a companion for time travel. The movie is inspired by a 1997 Backwoods Home Magazine classified ad.
Addams Family (1991): The satirical comedy, based on the characters from the cartoon of the same name, revolves around the gothic family who experience the return of a relative by the name of Fester (Christopher Lloyd) after a 25-year absence. Talented Puerto Rican actor Raúl Juliá plays Gomez Addams, the head of the Addams clan.
What to Expect When You're Expecting (2012): The romantic comedy, directed by Kirk Jones, comes from a screenplay by Shauna Cross and Heather Hach, and it's based on the pregnancy guide of the same name. The film has an ensemble cast, and features Puerto Rican all-star Jennifer Lopez and Cuban actress Cameron Diaz.
Mamitas (2011): The understated gritty film centers on an arrogant teenager, Jordin, who strikes up a friendship with a bookish, no-nonsense New Yorker, Felipa. The film stars E.J. Bonilla, Veronica Diaz-Carranza, and Josue Aguirre.
Fun Size (2012): The Halloween comedy revolves around a teenage girl, her friends and her little brother as they experience misadventures. The Nickelodeon film stars Latina Victoria Justice, as well as Jane Levy, Thomas Mann, Chelsea Handler, Thomas McDonell and Osric Chau.
Hermano / Brother (2010): The Venezuelan drama tells the story of two brothers who live in the dangerous city of Caracas and both love soccer. One brother focuses on providing for the family, while the other seeks a career as a professional soccer player. The film is directed by Marcel Rasquin and stars Fernando Moreno, Eliú Armas, and Gonzalo Cubero.
